2019: the year in afropunk dj mixes

December 6, 2019

DJs have long been a part of what makes AFROPUNK special. But it wasn’t until this year that we took the plunge and started asking the great DJs playing all the AFROPUNK festivals around the world to give us a mix, so we could loudly proclaim to the world how fucking dope they are. Everybody who contributed brought their A-game. But some of them went all the way over the top, to a whole new level. And based on the Soundcloud play counts, you agreed. Here’s five of our absolutely favorite AFROPUNK mixes. And yours.

Th Brazilian Shaka Lion‘s mix ahead of his star-making appearance at AFROPUNK Paris is one of the best sets of music we’ve heard all year. Global beats done right.

The Soulection crew’s latest all-star, Californian Sasha Marie knows her way around that soulful/R&B/bossa/house groove, and Lord did she bring the thoughtful sexy heat on her mix.

We’ve been around the world with Muzi in 2019. Since AFROPUNK Joburg 2018, he dropped two albums — the incredible Afrovision and the great Zeno — and developed a live/DJ set that ripped up Paris and Brooklyn. That’s what this mix — full of his own tracks and classic SA jive — is all about.

The one and only Queen of Jersey Club, UNIIQU3 returned to the AFROPUNK Brooklyn stage; but before that, she delivered 25mins that made ears around the world perk the efff up. (Oh, and her after-party with MikeQ and AceMoMa was pure fire.)

There’s a lot we’re looking forward to at AFROPUNK Joburg 2019, but DJ/producer Gina Jeanz‘s selections are definitely near the top. Prediction: this woman is headed for stardom. Jump on the bandwagon now.
