Born Takudzwa Victoria Rosa Maidza, Tkay is a Zimbabwean-born Australian rapper and singer-songwriter. While just beginning to break into Western markets, Tkay has become a household name in Australia. Maidza has played most of the Australian major festivals including Groovin’ the Moo, Stereosonic, Falls Festival, and Meredith Festival. That same year, she was featured in Australian Vogue and supported Charli XCX on her Australian tour.
Since her debut, Tkay made a feature on Troye Sivan’s debut album Blue Neighbourhood and supported his shows in London, Paris, Berlin, and Los Angeles. In 2016, she released her debut album Tkay, with standout hits Simulation and Carry On featuring Killer Mike.
Aside from music and touring, Tkay has contributed to high profile ad campaigns through her career. In 2018, Coca-Cola commissioned Maidza for their Australian campaign, Make It Yours, featuring a jingle created by Tkay. Likewise, in 2019, Instagram commissioned Maidza for their campaign, Get Into What You Love.
Her single Shook, along with the video, captures some of Tkay’s strongest rhymes and has been met with praise from fans and music publications. Most recently, her single Don’t Call Again featuring Kari Faux showcases Tkay’s singing and songwriting abilities. With this versatility, citing influences like Nicki Minaj, Santigold, and Azealia Banks, Tkay carves a lane of her own with electronic and synthpop influenced hip hop.
