April 22, 2020

With businesses suffering major blows due to mass shutdown and less customers who are able to support during this time, there are so many companies at risk. Our Spinthrift Market series will feature different exceptional Black businesses in need of some love. If you are able to please consider buying from these businesses who we hope can survive this difficult time. Good luck to all the companies working hard to push through!

Today we feature a duo with a brand new company who are using this unprecedented time to bring some life into our homes. Adapting to the world of today, Mignon Hemsley and Danuelle Doswell of Grounded, have just launched a virtual plant shop in DC! See what they had to say.

Tell us about your business.
Grounded was created to help you disconnect and decompress through the appreciation of plants in the spaces we occupy. Our selection of plants has a plethora of benefits designed to elicit a sense of tranquility and mindfulness. From boosting your creativity and concentration, to reducing stress and purifying the air, the influence of plants within a given environment, has proven to be advantageous. Introducing plants to your space has the capacity to improve your health and overall happiness.

What is the goal of your business?
Our goal is to accomplish impact. We want to educate the black community and beyond of the tremendous benefits of plants, not only physically but mentally in your spaces. With all of the technological advances and worldly transitions, in order to stay grounded mentally, it’s important for us to take a step back and disconnect from our days. Through the appreciation, dedication, and care of plants in our space, this is attainable.

How has COVID-19 affected you?
With everything closed during COVID-19, we’ve had to come to the realization that the pandemic will change society forever. We stayed true to our initial launch date being Earth Day 2020 and knew that our business would be beneficial to our community especially since it was always going to be virtually accessible. We wanted to provide people with an opportunity, even more, to disconnect and unplug from current events, and shift focus on providing care to plants. When the world around you seems a bit chaotic, the synergy between plants and humans is a natural progression in helping us to remain grounded.

How would you like to see your business grow?
Over the next few years, we want to create a physical space for people to disconnect and decompress together through our platform and business. In the warmer months, we want to create a hands-on ‘grow your own food’ programs with the youth and educate the next generation on sustainability, planting, and gardening which all play a role in eliminating our carbon footprints making the world a better place.

Is there anything else you would like to let our audience know?
Being gentle with plants allows you to be gentle with yourselves and give us a sense of empowerment. We offer a  subscription program where we’re looking to provide not just consumers but businesses with curated packages of plants that will enhance their professional environments mentally and physically.

Grow with them on Instagram and Facebook.
