Inspired by the urban environment of the South Los Angeles neighborhood whilst focusing on the African Diaspora, Leimert Park Threads is motivated by the struggle and strife of Black, brown and colored life. Walker’s mission is to educate and enrich Black culture through purposeful clothing and experiences.
His Colored Collection has been worn by Issa Rae (remember the Season 3 finale of Insecure when she was in bed with Nathan right before he ghosted her ) and Chadwick Boseman.
Walker says: “The Colored Collection is meant to inspire conversations while reclaiming the word Colored and attempting to place a more positive thought process around the word’s usage and history.”
The Howard University grad has also created an HBUS Collection which Beyoncé and Ciara have both rocked.
This young, renown photographer turned entrepreneur is using his creative vision to build a Black business that supports and inspires our community. He brought Leimert Park Threads to AFROPUNK JoBurg’s SpinThrift Market with this new Africa Inspired Collection that is clearly Afrocentric, nods to Afro-Futurism, and is culturally nuanced for The Continent. Walker even added the “u” to the Colored Collection — spelling it as Coloured to speak directly to this South African market and mixed-race community.
“Afro-Futurism is the act of re-imagination, reclamation of black identity — a rejection and subversion of debilitating stereotypes, an expression of the infinite ways of interpreting the past, present & future, demonstrating the cosmopolitan reality of the Black experience,” Walker explains.
Now that is Pan Africanism at its finest and Blackety Black Black. Yebo!!!
