New York-based illustrator Jaleel Campbell has stunned us with his depictions of Black beauty before, but now he is taking us to a whole new level—and back through time.

His latest series, “Feel That Funk”, is inspired by the Black Arts Movement that changed the landscape of artistry globally in the 60’s and 70’s. Some of Campbell’s influences from that period include Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Barkley Hendricks and Emory Douglas, and their work shines through in his trademark fusion of geometric layers in complementary deep shades.

“I am on a mission to make the world beautiful,” Campbell explained. “To remind people—Black people—that no matter what you may have heard in the media or elsewhere, you are beautiful and worthy… In today’s culture, I notice a resurgence of the principles (the Black Arts Movement) stood for and believe that my work truly captures the essence of the time.”
