11-year-old black french girl impregnated by 22-year-old man, jury says she was “consenting”

Meanwhile, in France, a now 30-year-old man has been acquitted of raping an 11-year-old girl, of Congolese origins, in Seine-et-Marne in back in 2009 when he was 22-year-old, an incident that resulted in the child’s impregnation. Prosecuted for having sex with a minor under 15 years of age (the age of consent in France), the Cape Verdean man claims that the child did in fact consent to sex with him during their interaction almost 10 years ago. Despite the fact that a child of 11 years of age isn’t legally old enough to consent in France, the jury found this reasoning substantial enough to acquit the 30-year-old of rape.

In the wake of this disturbing and immoral ruling, citizens and activists, like Maboula Soumahoro, have chided the jury for displaying a racial bias in which black children are treated far older than they actually are. In this instance, jurors felt that an 11-year-old black girl should be held to the same standards as a 15-year-old while failing to hold the actual adult in the situation accountable.

French lawmakers are now looking at having conversations about raising the legal age of consent.
