international women’s day is about our rights, not some commercial ‘kumbaya’ holiday

Not to be uber-negative on this international day of womanhood, but I do what to keep it real. And in doing so, consider this to be a very friendly reminder that while we’re holding hands and shit, let’s remember that there’s still very real work to do and that the advancements we’ve made so far, collectively on the global scale, still leaves much to be desired. And for many women, even that is an understatement. While International Women’s Day is a day worth celebrating, and there are many women whose achievements are worth celebrating, like Tarana Burke and her #MeToo movement. Today is also a day to remember and do work for the marginalized women who, unlike Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, aren’t safe to come forward about abuse. The women Tarana has spent years fighting for.
