Among the most in-demand live mixers in South Africa at the moment, Doowap (born: Khetsiwe Morgan) comes to her DJ skills through a love and a study of sound. Her degree in sound engineering adds to her love and infinite skills at showcasing bass-driven music throughout the world. And now, finally, after her killer appearances in Joburg, she’s coming to AFROPUNK Brooklyn, where she will grace both a big stage at Commodore Barry Park and an After Dark party. Doowap even made us a mix to see what we can expect, and provided some insights as to the origins of her sound. Enjoy!

How did you first get into DJ’ing, and who are some of your DJing influences?

During my Sound Engineering studies I took a short DJ course with DJ4Life to make some money whilst studying. Once I completed my DJ course I played my first DJ set with an eclectic mix of music and was scouted by the number one youth radio station in South Africa called YFM. They gave me a show and a platform to showcase my skills and to discover young talent to play on the airwaves. Everything grew from there. Huge influences at the time — not necessarily DJs — were Spoko, Okzharp, TroyBoi and MUZI.

What kind of music should we expect you to play at AFROPUNK?

At AFROPUNK Brooklyn I would like to predominantly play music from Africa and its Diaspora. These are the sounds that inspire me to dance and perform. You can expect a lot of Afropop, Gqom and Amapiano.

What are you most looking forward to at AFROPUNK Brooklyn?

I look forward to meeting all the beautiful beings that will attend AFROPUNK. The AFROPUNK audience is always so open and beautiful. I know the fashion killas and dance-floor champions are really going to inspire me. I am especially excited to share the energy and sounds from back home in South Africa. I also can’t wait to hopefully meet some of my favourite artists at the minute: Rico Nasty, IAMDDB…

What does the phrase “We See You” mean to you?

“We See You” for me means we see your spirit; past all the material and flesh…we see the beautiful starlight you are.

Catch Doowap at AFROPUNK Brooklyn on August 24th, and at her AFROPUNK After Dark after-party.
