AFROPUNK BLKTOPIA At ESSENCE FEST | Tapping Into Wellness: EFT Workshop for Emotional Wellness

One of the key features of the Afropunk Blktopia space was its emphasis on mental and emotional wellness. Throughout the three-day voyage into Black futurist idealism, experts across fields explore ways that Black diasporic peoples could lead healthier lives. In a wellness workshop designed to provide a toolkit for dismantling psychological distress, New Orleans-based counselor Daryaan McLeod introduced the concept of the Emotional Freedom Technique. McLeod is the founder of Kweli Counseling and brings her deep understanding of diverse cultural renditions of self-care practices to introduce the benefits of tapping for emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Tapping, also known as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), is a therapeutic practice that involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on a particular issue or emotion. This practice is designed to release emotional blockages, reduce stress, and promote a sense of grounding and calm. McLeod explained that tapping can be particularly beneficial for the Black community, which often faces unique stressors and systemic challenges.

With a warm and welcoming approach, McLeod guided the audience through a series of tapping exercises, emphasizing the importance of customization to fit each individual’s unique needs and circumstances. As she tapped on various points, such as the side of the hand, the top of the head, and under the eyes, she encouraged participants to repeat affirmations that resonated with their personal experiences. Her soothing voice and reassuring presence created a safe space for self-discovery and healing.

At different points, McLeod invited the audience to replicate her demonstrations. Hands rose in unison, tapping rhythmically on the designated points. The collective energy in the room was palpable, a shared moment of community and introspection. Participants closed their eyes, focused on their breath, and tapped away the stress and anxiety that had been weighing them down. It was a powerful testament to the accessibility and effectiveness of tapping as a grounding exercise.

McLeod’s session was more than an informational demonstration; it was a communal experience that underscored the importance of nurturing the emotional and mental health of the Black community. Her personalized approach, which she extends through her online services at Kweli Counseling, ensures that each individual receives the support that resonates with their authentic self. As she noted, “Together, we will navigate the challenges, savor the triumphs, and artfully weave your distinct story into a mosaic of authenticity and growth.”

The session concluded with a round of heartfelt applause, participants feeling more grounded and connected to themselves and each other. McLeod’s expertise and empathetic delivery made the practice of tapping not just a technique, but a transformative journey toward healing and self-empowerment.
