The Politics Of Style At AFROPUNK Brooklyn 2023

August 31, 2023

Since inception, the AFROPUNK festival has held a significant importance as a platform for celebrating and embracing diversity, self-expression, and empowerment, particularly for people of color and queer individuals. The festival have evolved beyond mere music events, becoming spaces where fashion serves as a dynamic form of self-expression and a potent tool for reclaiming cultural narratives and space. Fashion at AFROPUNK festivals has never been focused on trends; it’s a powerful means of communicating identity, history, and resistance. For people of color, who have often been marginalized and excluded from mainstream fashion narratives, these gatherings provide an opportunity to showcase their unique styles, drawing inspiration from their cultural heritage, history, and contemporary influences. By doing so, they challenge conventional beauty standards and assert their presence on their own terms. This past weekend, members of the AFROPUNK community gathered in Brooklyn once more to celebrate their identities without fear of judgement or prejudice.

In case you missed it, here are some of the looks from artists on stage and the people we felt inspired by.
