Rising Post-Punk Act Kokutan Kicks Into The Next Gear With “Buckle Up”

March 15, 2023
53 Picks

With only their second single, rising post-punk band Kokutan is already shaping up to be a force in the scene. Their stripped down sound: vocals, distorted bass, and drums cuts through the bullshit of so much hyper-produced DIY music letting the personalities of the performers shine through. It’s loud, it’s fun, it’s both irreverent and fierce. No surprise coming from former Shotgun Samurai and Prince Golden vocalist Mateo, whose past projects have been consistent highlights. Now focused on the instrumental side, the juxtaposition of Mateo’s intensity and lead vocalist Ebony’s ethereality on “Buckle Up” gives the band a unique vibe that pushes them forward. Wherever they’re headed next, we want to come along for the ride for sure.

Mateo tells us: “I love this project because I’ve always been a vocalist. It’s nice to step back and just create the music for once. I’m learning new things everyday. We just started creating and these are the songs that have been coming to fruition.”
