Meet YANY Beauty Founder Yaminah Childress, Who Is Conquering Beauty And Tech

October 27, 2022

NFTs are so hot right now. Complex and sometimes controversial, NFTs are what creators are buzzing about lately. Innovators like Yaminah Childress, leader of the first Black-owned NFT beauty company, YANY Beauty, are paving the way to an inspiring future. In this reality, diversity and inclusion are a must, and beauty and tech go hand-in-hand.

AFROPUNK is taking a deep dive into the journey of entrepreneur Yaminah Childress and her mission to drive diversity and inclusivity through her groundbreaking brand, YANY.

A Heart-Driven Journey

Social Entrepreneur, Business Consultant, Certified Mindfulness Coach, and self-proclaimed “Boss Mom and Wife,” Childress founded YANY Beauty in 2012 while obtaining her law degree. Luxury beauty “without the luxury price tag” that touts sustainable, clean, and cruelty-free products for folks of all colors and cultures is the name of the game for YANY.

“I was a beauty lover who had a hard time finding beauty products that were clean and made for my skin tone and type. I love the beauty world but knew it needed changes. I wanted to solve a problem in the beauty industry – that was inclusivity.”

These days the YANY brand is also occupying space in the virtual art world. Being self-taught in the worlds of cryptocurrency and NFTs, blending her passion for beauty and her lifetime love of tech was a no-brainer for Childress.

Beauty Meets Tech

Much like the world of beauty, tech spaces can be less than desirable diversity-wise. Studies show that women only make up 25% of people in tech, and only 3% of those are Black women. The similarities between the beauty and tech industries concerning the diversity gap are not lost on Childress.

“Beauty has always been a topic of much debate driven by race, size, and looks that only a few decided were considered beautiful. I see the same trends in tech spaces where almost all the driving companies are owned and operated by the same people.”

Much like her original vision with YANY, Childress’ current mission is to create space for diversity and inclusivity in beauty, tech, and everything in between.

“Each space, separately and collectively, needs to be representative of the world, so everyone can feel empowered to enter these spaces. Our company is driving change in beauty and tech by creating products and art specifically made with all people in mind.”
