Target Uplifts Black Businesses Through Their Black Beyond Measure Platform, Making It Easy To Buy Black

August 15, 2022

This past June at our Solution Session event in Minneapolis in partnership with Target and their always-on platform #BlackBeyondMeasure, we sat down with entrepreneur and founder of The Get Down Coffee Co., Houston White, to talk about the importance of uplifting Black culture while keeping the dollar circulating in Black communities.

White commented, “I feel like the cultural and entrepreneurial experience has been the one missing piece to make Minneapolis the world class city that I hope, and think it’ll become. Solution Sessions is a global platform for understanding that culture is the most valuable currency.”  It was after his first real coffee experience in his 30s that he had the idea to bring specialty coffee to Minneapolis and use it as a stepping stone to creating a cultural hub for young Black creatives. Founded in 2021, The Get Down Coffee Co. was White’s way of bringing diversity to the coffee industry while investing in his community by employing a team from within North Minneapolis and harnessing the power of human connection and cultural collision. Prior to launching The Get Down Coffee Co. Houston had already established his Black Excellence brand which he’d successfully sold into Target stores. So it was a natural fit to host Solution Sessions this June which was powered by Target and their Black Beyond Measure platform, which uplifts and shares Black creator and founder stories, showcasing Black intersectionality and joy, and making it easy to buy Black year-round

You can watch the full interview with Houston White above. And to learn more about how Target is investing in the community from spotlighting Black entrepreneurs to supporting HBCUs, to selling Black-owned brands like Houston White’s specialty coffee from The Get Down Coffee Co. here
