dj ohso presents the first afropunk atlanta playlist for 2021

August 6, 2021

DJ OHSO’s sonic genius and charismatic style have earned her respect from shows like Radar Radio in London and Sway In The Morning, while independently garnering over 2 million streams of her mixes worldwide. She does this all as if it is effortless, with beaming charisma and a pseudo model tomboyish style. Ahead of AFROPUNK ATLANTA 2021, DJ OHSO curated a playlist featuring the likes of Fousheé, Rico Nasty, Serperntwithfeet, Hollow Sinatra, Tems and many more other performing acts at AFROPUNK ATLANTA. Make sure you purchase your tickets HERE for a chance to catch them live on September 25 & 26.

How did you get into Djing, and how long have you been doing it?

I initially experienced an interest in DJing after I snuck out of the house to go to a concert and saw a DJ for the first time but it wasn’t until 12 years later where I met a DJ at my job who let me practice on his turntables at home. And I haven’t turned back since!!

What drives your creativity? What’s your edge?

My peers are a big piece of what drives my creativity. Being able to create an experience that they can live in the moment for, as well as reminisce about later, is such a satisfying feeling for me. I just want everyone to have fun and feel good about themselves any chance I can get. I would say that my edge is my fearlessness. I’m always ready to do things outside of my comfort zone or away from the norm, and it truly leaves people with a lasting experience.

What positive changes have you seen in the industry since Covid forced people to think outside the box?

I believe that the challenge to create outside of the norm is a positive change in itself. It had started to feel like everything was the same wherever you went, and now we’re getting to exercise our creativity in ways that still create lasting moments/experiences for our consumers whether it be live or virtually.

What did you miss about AFROPUNK Festivals?

I missed the people the most. AFROPUNK is always a time where so many free, like-minded, individuals come to express themselves and spread so much love. There aren’t too many festivals like AP out there, so a year without it was rough!!

What’s one genre you think people would be surprised that you listen to?

I pretty much listen to everything, but I think some people might be surprised that I grew up listening to alternative artists like Korn, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit etc.

Is there any new artist you’re excited about right now and you think deserves more recognition?

I’m pretty excited about Beam right now. He’s already gotten some big placements in the last year and change, but he’s for sure someone to keep an ear out for in the future.
