On the latest from boyband, the singer-songwriter-producer draws inspiration from Kazuya Tsurumaki’s masterwork anime FLCL, documenting relationship anxieties over a future-alternative track. For those who haven’t seen FLCL (and there are only 18 episodes total and 6 in the original run, so you really have no excuse not to), the series plays out like a love letter to animation itself. It’s fitting then that boyband should pepper his songwriting with such an array of influences that trying to pin it to a genre is an exercise in futility. ‘by myself’ is crafted out of winding hooks over distorted-to-oblivion guitars and a beat beamed in from a past-imagined future. It’s a temporal timebomb, but one thing is clear: boyband has seen the future of alt rock.
