‘boy anonymous’ never runs out of creative ammunition

The rise of Paris Texas has been a much needed bright spot over these past few months. The Compton-based duo perfectly capture the mix of rage, malaise, burnout, and drive of the past year with their impossible to pin down sound. On their debut BOY ANONYMOUS, they jump from electro to grunge to R&B to indie rock sometimes within the span of a verse. The twin vocalists trade bars with self-depreciating braggadocio while lofi/hifi beats melt in the afternoon sun.

The record’s 8 tracks run through ideas like they’re running out of time but it somehow stays cohesive. From the triplet-driven synths of “CASINO” to the overdriven-to-oblivion guitars of “HEAVY METAL” Paris Texas open up portals in space and time to a dimension of their own creation. In an era where most bands hone their sound and then hammer it home until they become derivative of themselves BOY ANONYMOUS is the rare record that never runs out of creative ammunition. Shuttling from high to high, when it closes out with the transcendent shoe-gaze of “FORCE OF HABIT” the sound hovers in the air, demanding a repeat listen.
