ngabo finds the ‘courage’ to be his unapologetic self on new single

March 26, 2021

“Do you really wanna know
About these lines on my face?”

Known best to many of us as the singer of Motnreal indie rock outfit Dear Denizen, NGABO’s latest is a bubbling indie pop gem that builds waves of synths on top of haunted vocals. It’s beautiful and introspective, a heart-rending ode to the constant process of finding our true unapologetic selves beneath the layers imposed on us by society and we impose on ourselves to try to meet others expectations. It grows from an almost gothic intro into an anthemic hook with immaculately detailed textures drifting in and out of focus. The Congolese-Canadian artist says his new solo work are driven by a desire to draw on “all I learned during my Indie phase, and now leaning more into my African side of things,” adding the new single was born of feeling “like the times are calling for a seismic shift in all of us, and it’s going to take a great deal of courage and humility to make it happen.”
