Often when you’re writing about a song, you’re trying to explain to your readers why a song or artist is worth their time to check out. But if self-described “Black Feminist Sistah Punk band” Big Joanie releasing a 7″ with a cover of Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky” isn’t self-evident why you need this in your life, then you, my friend, have come to the wrong website. Big Joanie transforms Solange’s iconic hit into a six-minute jam of pure DIY transcendence. Steeped in thick waves of reverb, the band’s take on the song is a driving, angular quest for resilience that we could all use more of. So stop reading this, right now. Listen to the damn song and it’s fantastic B-side, a jagged-edged live take on the band’s 2018 single “It’s You.” It’s amazing. You’re amazing. You deserve it.

Snag your copy of the 7″ via Third Man Records on Bandcamp. https://bigjoanie.bandcamp.com/album/cranes-in-the-sky-b-w-its-you
