premiere: lianne la havas stirs the soul in “weird fishes” video
If you know AFROPUNK then you know that we love the multi-faceted talent that is Lianne La Havas. With a new album on the way. — this Friday, July 17 (!) — and a ticketed solo live concert performance stream on July 15 at The Roundhouse (!!) which lead up to the release, the English singer-songwriter has released a video for her take on Radiohead’s modern classic “Weird Fishes.”
Though the track was released at the end of June, we’re just now getting visuals for it today. In the video, we get a raw, entrancing in-studio performance with her band — a sample of what it’s like to see the U.K. chanteuse in action.
Her cover of “Weird Fishes” replaces here countryman Thom Yorke’s signature emotional yelps with La Havas’ dulcet tones which are equally as urgent yet distinctly feminine—where Yorke drowned in the emotion La Havas is propelled by them into an ascent. If this is an indication of what’s to come on her upcoming self-titled album and this week’s performance we’ll have no choice but to stan even harder than before.
“In the deepest ocean,
The bottom of the sea,
I did this cover of Radiohead
I hope they don’t sue me!”— Lianne La Havas
