Ho99o9’s latest is a statement of the two parallel but opposite needs of the moment: the need for immediate action and the need to heal. The explosive A-side is inspired by Christopher Dorner’s anti-LAPD massacre. It’s a classic hardcore invective against a system with oppression so baked-in it can never be reformed, only destroyed. “Pray or Prey” is more yin than B-side. Possibly the most contemplative track Ho99o9 has ever released, it’s a deep breath. The lyrics hold the contradictions of the moment between both hands, a plea to be prayed for and not to be seen as prey. The two sides of the band show through in the contrast, one of the purest manifestations of this bifurcated moment when every minute we switch between needing to rage and reflect.
