It’s been a while since we heard from Aaron Earl Livingston, better known as Son Little. Since the release of New Magic, his well-received full-length in 2017, we’ve clamored for more from this forward-thinking R&B/soul singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist — with the Jan. 31 release date of his new album, aloha, it seems like our prayers have been answered.

Today we’re getting a taste of what’s to come of his collaborative effort with producer Renaud Letang (Feist, Manu Chao) on his ode to perseverance “neve give up.” Existing at the intersection of blues and R&B with dub inflections in its production, the song features somber piano chords juxtaposed with stirring vocals that sound like determination and struggle. “Though I’m battered and blue/ Feel like I’m born to lose … Never will I give up,” sings in his signature rasp, reminding us that once we hit rock bottom the only way to got from there is up.
