“They tried to make a bitch disappear, you can’t keep a good bitch down.”

That’s a line from Mo’Nique’s new comedy special — and it is funny, blunt and completely truthful, just like its author. It is about damn time Mo’Nique be given a platform to come back to the stage, and one where she can bring her friends along with her.

The comedian extraordinaire, who has bet on herself and demanded to be treated as she should, has landed a big win. Her first comedy special in a decade, Mo’Nique & Friends: Live from Atlanta has found a home at Showtime. It will be produced by Mo’Nique herself and husband/manager Sidney Hicks.

Mo’Nique made multiple headlines over the past year when she aired the low-ball offer Netflix gave her for a comedy special. When she called out the offer’s implied misogynoir and illuminated the difference in the way she is treated versus her male counterparts, Mo’Nique was made to feel small and endured intimidation from all corners of Hollywood, friends and foes alike. She dealt with resistance by many who would rather maintain the easy status quo than listen to her valid butt uncomfortable points. Through it all, Mo’Nique remained strong, kind and, most importantly, herself. This is why we celebrate this moment and applaud her refusal to be silenced. Mo’Nique has survived and come out on top of a battle she should never have had to endure. She has inspired all kinds of marginalized people to stick up for themselves and speak what they know to be true even if it is against a system that pushes them into scary corners.

Congratulations are in order!

Mo’Nique & Friends: Live from Atlanta premieres on Showtime February 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
