meet the djs of afropunk joburg

December 30, 2019

AFROPUNK Joburg isn’t just a festival for live musicians, but for great DJs as well. Almost more than any other AFROPUNK festival around the world, it is an opportunity for DJs to set off a dancefloor. And on New Year’s Eve, no less. What better place and time to enjoy house, hip-hop, amapiano, disco, ballroom, the sounds of Brazilian funk or Southern funk. The DJs of AFROPUNK Joburg got all that. Get to know what they’re about to bring.

DJ mOma – Raised in Queens, Mohamed Hamad is a New York hero and one of the principles of the great, genre-free Everyday People party.

JazziDisciples – Tumelo “JazziQ’ and Josiah De Disciple are two of the originators of amapiano.

DJ Kenzhero – Producer Kenneth Bekizizwe Nzama brings the mixture of classic Blackness, from jazz to  hip-hop. Expect the unexpected.

DBN Gogo – Mandisa Radebe is one of the hardest-working DJs in South Africa, playing a signature mix of house, gqom and amapiano.

Batekoo – A Brazilian collective, and party, that is a culturally influential force for Black gay and trans nightlife, Batekoo DJs synthesize some of the nation’s most famous Black music rhythms.

Gina Jeanz – Gina Mwoombola is one of the hottest future beats DJ/producers in South Africa, flipping hip-hop classics and dembow beats with flair.

Zara Julius – One of Joburg’s “DJ’s DJs,” an artist, a musical archeologist, and a diverse (often vinyl-only) selector whose picks span timelines, continents and realities.

Lelowhatsgood – Founder of Vogue Nights Jozi, Ntsikelelo Zane Meslani is redefining SA queer culture while mixing Ballroom, Gqom, Baile Funk and disco into his sets.

FIF_LAAA – Refilwe Matabane’s deep sets dig out the best in underground hip-hop, neo-soul and house music.
