madison mcferrin reintroduces herself with ‘you + i’ ep

December 4, 2019

Allow Madison McFerrin to reintroduce herself. If you’re a fan of Brooklyn’s bubbling indie music scene, chances are you’ve heard the golden-voiced chanteuse at local hotspots like Baby’s All Right or C’mon Everybody.

Renown for layering and manipulating her flawless a capella vocals with the use of samplers and foot pedals, McFerrin’s long been a one-woman show — using her voice as her sole instrument on her soul-stirring Finding Foundations EP series.

On her new EP, You + I, lush production and instrumentation accompany her angelic voice. The new sounds come courtesy of her big brother Taylor McFerrin (whose own 2019 release, Love’s Last Chance, is once the year’s best electronic soul releases).

The intimate, relationship-based subject matter on You + I‘s songs, like “No Room” and “Unwise,” are both personal and universal. “As an artist,  I believe it is our responsibility to hold up a mirror to society,” she says via a statement about the six-song project. “That reflection is exactly what You + I is about.

Recently named a WNYC Artist-in-Residence, McFerrin hosts The Sissieretta Series that features multidisciplinary performances and conversations with New York City-based comedians, musicians, visual artists, and other creative women of color. The next event at NYC’s Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, will take place on January 7th, with tickets available here. She is also on tour right now.
