If you’re feeling some type of way over Lizzo living her life however the fuck she wants, you can go ahead and die mad.
The singer shook her ass court-side at the Lakers vs. Timberwolves NBA game on Sunday night in fishnet stockings and a magical dress with a see-through backside. And folks really seemed to be bothered by this. Instead of just letting the “Good as Hell” singer live, as we do with Rihanna, broke folks on the internet tried to shame Lizzo for dressing sexy and enjoying herself. Many complained that the singer was “doing too much”. Which is a weird observation to make considering she was dancing alongside cheerleaders who were wearing crop tops and booty shorts. What was it about Lizzo that was…too much?
The gross truth is that society cannot stand seeing a fat girl who doesn’t hate herself. For so long, women with bodies like Lizzo’s have been kept out of pop stardom altogether. And her meteoric rise challenges everything we as a society have been taught to conform into. Possessing that much freedom and power to the trapped, phobic and judgmental mindsets is, for some, unbearable.
Either way, Lizzo doesn’t give a fuck whether you like it or not.
“Negative criticism has no stake in my life, no control over my life or my emotions,” The singer said in a video on Instagram. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m surrounded by love and I just want to spread that love and also spread these cheeks. And you know, if you really, really don’t like my a–, you can kiss it, because kissing it makes it go away. I promise.”
“I just want y’all to know it doesn’t matter what goes on on the Internet — nothing really breaks my joy,” she said. “I’m a really solid, grounded person and I know that I’m shocking because you’ve never seen in a long time a body like mine doing whatever it wants to do and dressing how it dresses and moving the way that it moves. But I don’t ever want to censor myself because I’m suddenly famous or I don’t want to censor myself because everyone’s looking at me now. I’m not going to quiet myself. I’m not going to shrink myself because somebody thinks that I’m not sexy to them. Bitch, you really think ’cause somebody on Twitter think I’m not cute, I’m gon’ stop existing?”
