Ryan Coogler, his wife Zinzi Evans and Sev Ohanian have joined Legendary Pictures’ adaptation of David F. Walker, Sanford Greene and Chuck Brown’s acclaimed comic book series, Bitter Root. A thrilling fictional story set in the vibrant Harlem Renaissance of 1924, Bitter Root centers around a fractured family, the Sangeryes, a “once-great monster hunter who must face an unimaginable evil” as it makes its way through New York City.

According to the synopsis: For generations, the Sangeryes have hunted and cured those infected by a supernatural force that feeds off the prejudice of the era, transforming human beings into hideous monsters. But their heyday has faded and with most of the family dead, and the surviving Sangeryes at odds between saving or killing these creatures, the remaining Sangeryes must overcome the wounds of the past in the hopes of thwarting the invasion.

Although Lendendary’s adaptation of the comic series went into development spring of 2018, it has finally landed a producer in Coogler and his wife for the big-screen version.
