are we finally going to impeach the motherf*cker?

Has the day finally come? In the infamous words of Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, are we finally gonna “Impeach the Motherfucker?” And will it really do anything? Here’s what you need to know.

On Tuesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced an official impeachment inquiry into Trump. When it comes to Trump, impeachment talk isn’t new. Pelosi was slow to join the growing chorus of Democratic members of congress who have been demanding impeachment for some time, during the Mueller investigation. But now, it seems Trump’s alleged dirty dealings with Ukraine were the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The focus of the impeachment inquiry focuses on a whistleblower complaint from a member of the intelligence community regarding a July phone call that Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which he repeatedly pressured Zelensky to dig up dirt on Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden, and one of Trump’s biggest 2020 rivals. (There is no evidence to suggest the Bidens did anything wrong with regard to their business and political dealings in Ukraine.)

Trump’s administration dragged their feet on releasing the whistleblower complaint, which Pelosi called a “violation of the law” that “undermine[s] both our national security and our intelligence.” They finally made the complaint public to lawmakers late Wednesday — and to the public on Thursday.

In it the whistleblower is rightly freaked out about Trump using the presidency to shakedown foreign leaders: “I have received information from multiple U.S. Government officials that the President of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election. This interference includes, among other things, pressuring a foreign country to investigate one of the President’s main domestic political rivals.”

Trump has already admitted to the phone call in question but insists nothing inappropriate was discussed (so he says.) Wednesday his administration released a partial semi-transcript, which, frankly, doesn’t look great. It certainly seems like Trump is talking about quid pro quo, holding back military aid from Ukraine unless Zelensky coughs up Biden dirt. Basically, the whole thing is like Goodfellas if everyone in Goodfellas was a lot more stupid and jowly.

In the transcript of the call, Zelensky asks Trump for an increase in military aid.

Trump’s response? “I would like you to do us a favor though.” The favor? Investigate the Bidens. We actually already know this because Trump and his personal attorney (and part time Halloween mask) Rudy Giuliani already admitted it.

The timing of the call is also pretty sus. As Vox points out: A week before phoning Zelensky, who had just assumed office, Trump ordered chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to suspend $400 million worth of U.S. military aid to Ukraine (the aid was unlocked in September). So you have a new leader of a country locked in conflict with a much more powerful Russia, speaking to one of its principal international benefactors, which has recently suspended military aid.

So what happens next? Democratic members of Congress are circling the wagons to vote for impeachment, which is already a pretty big deal. Only four other presidents in American history have face viable impeachment threats. But don’t start that celebratory milly rock just yet. Even if Congress votes to impeach, that doesn’t mean Trump will be kicked out of the White House. The Republican-controlled senate would still still need to vote on his removal from office. And while more Republican Senators are expressing concern about Trump’s actions, it still seems unlikely that they’d vote him out.

The bottom line? Trump has been a disaster for Black folks and we can’t count on lawmakers to save us.
