we demand more dark skinned popstars

God Bless Normani. 

It’s been a while since we’ve had a new pop queen to be excited about and this one’s a triple threat. Normani has just released her first featureless single as a solo artist and with it provided us with some much-needed representation. Her song “Motivation” not only bangs but comes with a music video full of sickening dance moves and looks proving she is already quite the superstar. 

Though the video has a nostalgic feel, paying homage to the 2000’s, it remains progressive. Normani is the latest proof that when we put underrepresented people in powerful places, beautiful change can happen. The video features  people in roles not often afforded to them because it was created by a popstar who doesn’t look like a lot of other popstars. It tackles colorism and body diversity by simply creating opportunity for people who don’t star in these type of mainstream videos.
