Unlocking the Truth have come a long way from their early days as a pre-teen metal sensation. Following the release of the trio’s outstanding debut record Chaos, and a smattering of singles that explored the band’s more industrial edges, Unlocking the Truth returns with its latest single “Pretend.”

The new track puts frontman Malcolm Brickhouse’s vocals front and center, more than they’ve ever been in UtT’s music. It’s a showcase of his evolution from the guitarist in an instrumental metal group, to the lead singer of a band that attempts to take contemporary metal to new melodic heights. That’s not to say Malcolm’s vocal focus has dulled Unlocking the Truth’s edges. The barbed-wire guitars and earth-shaking drums that have always been the heart and soul of its music remain, and thrash away indignantly. “Pretend” marks a new direction for a band that’s always been about challenging expectations and pushing metal forward.
