Remakes of classic or cult films are normally pretty cringe-worthy, but a “new” film by David M. Rosenthal looks pretty promising. A 21st century remake of 1990’s Jacob’s Ladder, Rosenthal’s film stars Michael Ealy, Jesse Williams, Nicole Beharie and Karla Souza. Acquired by Vertical Entertainment, the film will actually premiere on DISH later this month with a cinematic release in theaters in August. Filming originally took place back in 2016…kinda strange that it’s been held back for this long, but hopefully that’s not a bad omen.

Judging by the trailer, this retelling doesn’t appear to be a beat-for-beat remake of the original, Rosenthal’s version seems to be a life of its own, according to Deadline:

Jacob Singer is getting his life back together after his brother is killed in Afghanistan. Jacob has a beautiful wife, a newborn child and a successful career as a surgeon in a VA hospital. When a stranger approaches Jacob and reveals that his brother is actually alive and living in an underground shelter with other homeless vets, Jacob’s life starts to unravel. He begins hallucinating, believes he is being followed by violent attackers and becomes paranoid about the truth of what really happened to his brother. When he discovers that his brother is alive and addicted to an experimental drug, he uncovers a secret he never could have been prepared for.
