Eddie Murphy is acting in his first movie since 2016’s Mr. Church (shrug) and unlike some of the actor/comedian’s more recent work, this flick actually looks pretty good. Based on the life of X-rated comedian Rudy Ray Moore, Dolemite Is My Name explores the comedian’s career and legacy as The Godfather of Rap—a title he earned by infusing rhymes and humorous spoken word poetry into his performances—as well as the cult success he earned for playing 1970s pimp hero Dolemite in blaxploitation films.

Produced for Netflix, the film is scheduled to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival during its September 5-15 run. It will head to streaming sometime after that.

Starring alongside Murphy are Chris Rock, Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Tituss Burgess, Craig Robinson and Mike Epps. Dolemite Is My Name was written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, a duo known for their eccentric biopics like Ed Wood, Big Eyes, and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Best of all, legendary Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter is working on the film, too.
