afropunk paris: we worshipped at the church of lizzo

I have been changed. I have been converted. I, Erin Elyse, am a member of the Church of Lizzo.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I was excited to see the diva, armed with a flute, to take the stage at AFROPUNK Paris. But I wasn’t prepared for the epicness that was to ensue. And it only took 3 songs for the #LizzoEffect to take place.

Sis is in the prime of her Big Moment and everyone is excited to see her, but when you see Lizzo command the stage as she does, it really strikes you: this is the first legitimately plus-size contemporary pop icon. For every young girl who has wanted to be the next Britney Spears or whoever and never could because she didn’t “look” the part. All the record labels and A&R reps who pinched body fat and served up appetite suppressants. All the dreams killed before they were even articulated. Lizzo represents all of them; all of us.

And not only that, but homegirl definitely has the range to blow the roof off the joint with her golden pipes. Yeah, you can hear it on her albums…but when she runs out on stage all by herself, cuts the band and belts her ass off it’s hard to deny her immense likability.

Fuck what you heard if you heard differently: LIZZO is the truth.
