princess nokia, the bronx, and the 90’s is all you need to know
Destiny Frasqueri, also known as Princess Nokia, always feeds us with the best 90’s nostalgia. She manages to pay homage through love letters to New York City in her work musically, and now through film.
The news of Nokia’s latest venture into film is exciting. She will act in her debut role in a film called Angelfish which follows the romantic story of two teenagers in New York in 1993. Irish filmmaker Peter Lee is behind this coming-of-age romantic-drama. Shot in the Bronx, the film tells the story of Eva, a young Puerto Rican woman torn between her dreams and family and Brendan, an Irish-American man with family problems of his own.
Fans of Nokia can expect to see a softer more vulnerable side to her than the persona they may be used to. Those of us who keep up with Destiny through her socials, interviews or have heard her speak at her shows know she is more than capable of this.
Of the project, Frasqueri says, “I loved sharing this experience with Peter [Lee] and the incredible team of women who made this film possible. I’m really grateful to have someone believe in me so much, and believe in this talent — not just my name or the idea of me. He respected me, he respected New York, and the importance of bringing these Latino characters alive reflectively and accurately, which has truly meant the world to me.”
