Newly elected Republicans are wasting no time since the midterm elections to control and criminalize women’s reproduction rights. The latest in a slew of anti-choice bills come from Georgia’s Gov. Brain Kemp and it’s a doozy. The measure, HB 481, is being labeled as the most restrictive and extreme ban on abortion in the country. Not only because of the six-week limit on abortion access but because it would subject women who get illegal abortions to life imprisonment and the death penalty. Seriously.

The bill’s purpose is to prevent medical professionals from terminating any pregnancy after they can detect “embryonic or fetal cardiac activity,” which typically takes place six weeks after an egg is fertilized. So, basically, by the time a woman knows she’s pregnant…it’s too late to make a choice about carrying out the pregnancy. Not only that, but the sweeping provision goes on to declare that “unborn children are a class of living, distinct person” that deserves “full legal recognition.” Meaning, an unborn fetus in the state of Georgia has full rights and citizenship, despite not actually being born into this world.

The scariest aspect of HB 481 is that it will criminalize women for controlling their own reproduction or miscarrying. For example, if a woman miscarries she is now open to be charged for second-degree murder, punishable by 10 to 30 years of imprisonment if a prosecutor determines they can be held responsible for the miscarriage.

This latest measure is extremely scary and dangerous. If Republicans can’t overturn Roe v Wade directly, they will overturn it with contradictory and marginalize laws that hurt women and their families. And what are we gonna do about it? Vote.
