There is so much incredible Black fiction out there right now and many of the stories are coming to film and television. The acclaimed, Nigeria-born trans writer Akwaeke Emezi’s bestselling debut novel Freshwater is now in the early stages of development for a new series at FX! The chilling story follows Ada, an Igbo and Tamil woman from Nigeria who, while in her final years of college, learns that three spirits are living in her subconscious. Soon her sanity and her life are at stake when the other spirits attempt to take control of her.

The script adaptation is being wrier by Emezi, who will also be an executive producer on the project, alongside Tamara P. Carter, a screenwriter and director who’s worked on hit shows such as The Fosters and The Leftovers.

The project will be produced by Kevin Wandell and Lindsey Donahue under FX Productions.
