Before you presume that Steven Ellison, aka the A/V polymath who is Flying Lotus, has suddenly gone full Jordan Peele on everyone in his crazy new video for “Fire Is Coming,” it is important to remember that visual horror and fantasy has always been a part of FlyLo’s arsenal (Ellison studied film in college, and in 2017 produced Kuso, an avant-garde horror flick that played at Sundance).

Still there’s an US-level of “WTF???” taking place in and around the visual and music of “Fire Is Coming,” which was co-directed by British animator and satirist David Firth, and features legendary weirdo filmmaker David Lynch telling the opening lines of a horror story to a den full of feral wolf children.

It is a preface to the new Flying Lotus album, Flamagra, which drops on May 24th, and according to Ellison, sounds like it has a thematic tale to tell. In a statement he said, “I’d been working on stuff for the past five years, but it was always all over the place. I’d always had this thematic idea in mind — a lingering concept about fire, an eternal flame sitting on a hill. Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people would go on dates there and some people would burn love letters in that fire.”

To whet your appetite even more, in addition to Lynch, other guests on Flamagra include Solange, Anderson .Paak, George Clinton,  Tierra Whack, Denzel Curry, Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, Toro y Moi and Little Dragon.
