It’s been a whole year since we last updated you guys on the feature film development of Tomi Adeyemi’s smash YA fantasy novel The Children of Blood and Bone.

And it looks like the highly anticipated adaptation found a director in Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, Brown Sugar). Also, the script will be adapted by Academy-Award nominated screenwriter David Magee (Life of Pi). And, boy, has this been a longtime in the making. Fox originally acquired the rights to Adeyemi’s novel before it was even published, sensing the immense potential in the franchise.

At the time of its publication, The Children of Blood and Bone made one of the biggest debuts in YA publishing, as the result of a seven-figure deal between Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group and Adeyemi.

“Set in the fictionalized Orïsha, the novel follows Zélie Adebola, a younger girl who sells fish with her father and a diviner with magic powers that transform her into a maji. When the King of Orïsha orders for all who possess black magic to be killed, and with the help of the princess, who is in possession of one of the last maji scrolls, Zélie endeavors to bring the magic back.”
