we’re *all* proud mamas to marsai martin

February 8, 2019

We’ve loved Marsai Martin since her hilarious, impressive job portraying Dianne on Blackish. We’ve known of Marsai since she was just a tot, and are proud to watch the teen making creative and money moves recently. More importantly, we’re beyond ecstatic to have her important voice penetrate Hollywood in the years to come.

Martin is following in the footsteps of her TV sister and real life friend Yara Shahidi in becoming one of the voices of young Black experience in Hollywood. She is a trailblazer, opening doors for more dark-skinned girls to come.

The entire Internet geeked last month when the trailer to Little starring Marsai, Regina Hall, Justin Hartley, and Issa Rae dropped. We were impressed not only by the concept and Marsai’s acting chops but that she herself had the idea for the movie. Marsai took the initiative to make the dream come to life and no matter your age, that is very impressive.

This week, it was announced that Martin and her company Genius Productions inked a first-look deal with Universal. This makes Marsai the youngest person to get this deal at any studio in recent memory. The first project they will release is called StepMonster, about a teenage girl adjusting to life with a new stepmother.

“I am so excited for the magic I’ll be able to create and produce with Universal,” Martin said. “Mr. Cramer and Ms. [Donna] Langley’s commitment to investing in and uplifting diverse and young voices is both refreshing and important, and I’m happy to be a part of that legacy. My goal is to show young women and girls that our voices and ideas matter and you are never too young to dream BIG!” – Marsai Martin

Well Marsai, we can’t wait to see what you bring into the world! You continue to inspire Black kids and adults everywhere. Let’s celebrate Marsai!!!
