new kaytranada track is a soul-sampling miniature

Not a month after slaying AFROPUNK Joburg on New Year’s Eve, our favorite Haitian-Canadian soul-funk-disco producer/DJ returns with “Well I Bet Ya,” an excellent two-minute contribution to Gangster Music, Vol. 1, a mixtape of assorted indie beat-making and MCing all-stars that you may want to click on. Kay’s track features a sample of some very Philly soul strings and a harp, as well as a smooth vocal break that we’re embarrassed not to be able to identify off-the-cuff. Consider that our crate-digger fail — but the track is dope. Also contributing to the mixtape, which is a collaboration between Toronto-based DJ/illustrator Gangster Doodles and the Dublin’s All City label, are, among others, Jeremiah Jae, Quelle Chris and Madlib.

Gangster Music, Vol. 1 drops on Gangster Doodles/All City on March 1st/
