three new kaytranada tracks, something for everybody

November 30, 2018

After announcing earlier this week on Instagram that new music was imminent, AFROPUNK favorite (and AFROPUNK Joburg headliner) Kaytranada dropped three tracks on Friday morning, each of which showcases a different side of what makes the Haitian-Canadian producer/DJ one of the primary movers in music in 2018.

Lead track, “Nothin Like U,” features Ty Dolla $ign’s trademark auto-tuned vocals moving between crooning and spitting towards a loved one.  The Montreal up’n’comer (and frequent Kay collaborator) Shay Lia features on “Chances,” a punky and forceful soulful pop tune about running away with a great chorus.  There’s also the instrumental “It was Meant 2 B,” the kind of laidback sensuous club track that the producer born Louis Kevin Celestin has made his sizable reputation on.

Few beatmakers working right now have struck Kay’s creative balance, writing and producing instrumental tunes (not just tracks) which fit into both classic disco-house vibes and progressive contemporary R&B/hip-hop playlists. Kay’s got a way with melody, with particular keyboard and synth sounds, and especially with a 4/4 beat (especially prominent here on “Chances”) that fully sets him apart. More please!
