Ezra Miller is receiving a lot of praise for their looks and soundbites that queer the role of a leading Hollywood star. We’ve been seeing more of them because of their red carpet and magazine looks that challenge gender and sexuality assumptions. For The Hollywood Reporter they even said, “Queer just means no, I don’t do that. I don’t identify as a man. I don’t identify as a woman. I barely identify as a human.”

Ezra Miller’s images and ideas can be seen as the queer representation so many of us thirst for, unless if you are Black, of course. Twitter user, @SarahSahim responded to a Playboy photoshoot featuring Miller with the tweet: “he made a documentary about Mike Brown’s murder from the perspective of the officer who shot him.” Another Twitter user @Anxiety_Jane responded, “From the article Ezra Miller co-wrote about why her [sic] made a film humanizing the cop who killed Mike Brown, ‘do we continue to point our anger at the other as opposed to an acknowledgement of our collective responsibility.’ Fuck Ezra forever.’”

Upon further investigation, it appears to be true. Ezra Miller did co-write and direct a film called The Truth According To Darren Wilson. In this film they take the on story of the tragic, racist murder of Mike Brown from the perspective of the cop, Darren Wilson, who shot him, which creates a sympathy around him that fails to hold him accountable for his lethal action rooted in racism.

This is disappointing for Black fans of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Justice League who might have wanted to embrace Ezra Miller since they play major roles in many coveted films and television projects. And this is also a blow to Black people that might still feel affirmed by Ezra’s queer representation even if they were not fans of their film or television project.

Can you suspend what you know about Ezra Miller’s participation in creating content that sympathizes with Darren Wilson or is this another example of white supremacy snatching another enjoyable thing from Black people?
