the “beauty and ugliness of contemporary american life” gets surrealist interpretation by visual storyteller terence nance
Terence Nance’s ‘RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS’ is introduced by Nance as “a show about the beauty and ugliness of contemporary American life.” The show will consist of “a unique mix of vérité documentary, musical performances, surrealist melodrama and humorous animation,” to form a stream of consciousness response to the contemporary American media-scape. The seemingly irrational juxtaposition of imagery and art-form actually form deliberately interconnected vignettes, executed by a cast of emerging and established talent.
“Nance and his collaborators weave together such themes as ancestral trauma, history, death, the singularity, romance and more, creating a television show like nothing seen before.” – Medium
‘RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS’ will explore cultural idioms like patriarchy, white supremacy and sensuality through segments like a first-person shooter game for woman that eliminates street harassers with scowls, a parody informercial for an ointment that cures “white thoughts” and a consideration of whether Michelle Obama is in fact, God. Themes covered in the 6 episodes explore a broad range of issues from ancestral trauma to romance and death.
Nance serves as the writer, executive producer, director and composer while also appearing in all six episodes alongside Dominique Fishback (HBO’s ‘The Deuce’), Whoopi Goldberg (‘The Color Purple’), Gillian Jacobs (‘Community’), Ntare Guma Mwine (‘The Chi’), Adepero Oduye (’12 Years a Slave’), Natalie Paul (‘The Deuce’) and Paul Sparks (‘Boardwalk Empire’), among others.
RANDOM ACTS ON BLACKNESS premiers on HBO at midnight on August 3rd.
