The move is clearly a way to prevent athletes from protesting silently against the United States’ institutional racism and police brutality. Those who don’t want to stand have the option to go in the locker room during the anthem, which once again erases potential protests.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said: “We want people to be respectful of the national anthem. We want people to stand – that’s all personnel – and make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion.”
