Hopefully teasing plans about the eventuality of a Shuri ‘Black Panther’ spin-off director and co-writer Ryan Coogler gushed over the possibility while speaking at the Cannes Film Festival this week. During the nearly two-hour-long talk, when asked about his perspective on how important the female characters— Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), and Okoye (Danai Gurira)—were to the record-smashing film’s success, Coogler doubled-down on how crucial they were to the storytelling:

“I think you could argue they are more important,” Coolger said. “There’s a whole section of the film where T’Challa [Chadwick Boseman] is out of the movie and you’re just following the women. That’s one of my favorite parts of the movie when I watched it, and I didn’t expect that. That part of the movie you feel like you’re watching something fresh and new. That part of it was exciting. We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie.”

Coogler went on to say that if the opportunity arises, he would be ready to bring that project to life. “That would be amazing if the opportunity came up,” he said. “They did it in the comic-book version.”
