‘cash me outside’ girl nominated for billboard best rap award is why mainstream awards ain’t sh*t
At risk of giving her, even more, spins, that ridiculous Danielle “Cash Me Outside” Bregoli girl is nominated for a Billboard Music Award for the Top Hip-Hop artist. Apparently, the only qualifications for such an award are charting on the Billboard 100. And that’s it.
What’s so absurd about acknowledging this bad ass little white girl’s “music” as hip-hop is that it’s a huge slap in the face to artists like Nicki Minaj, who is also nominated, and who has spent more than a decade pursuing and mastering hip-hop and even to up-and-comer Cardi B, who is afro-latinx at least, makes bangers, and actually takes the genre seriously. Whereas “Bhad Bhabie” is a bizarre internet meme come to life, a reward for a white girl’s ugly behavior and caricature of black culture.
And the fact that the Billboard Awards can’t tell the difference between the two, or doesn’t care to, is grossly disrespectful to hip-hop and more directly, the black community that invented and continues to evolve the art form.
So, why do we, the black community keep expecting our art forms and our artists to be respected by mainstream institutions? Oscars, Grammys, etc. Why do we keep wanting approval from mainstream white institutions that don’t respect us and our culture?
