Costa Ricans are celebrating the elections of their newest president, Carlos Alvarado, and their first Black woman Vice-President, the first in all of the Americas, actually, Epsy Campbell Barr. The new VP is a left-leaning feminist economist, author, and cofounder Costa Rica’s power-to-the-people Citizen’s Action Party.  She and Alvarado won in a landslide on a historic gay rights platform.
“It will be a responsibility not only to represent people of African descent,” Campbell Barr told CRHoy before the election, “but to represent all women and men in the country, a country that gives us all the same opportunities.”
