Humongous news for the fashion world came down recently with the unexpected announcement from Louis Vuitton with the promotion of Virgil Abloh as head designer of menswear. And as incredible as that is, it’s really just another reminder that we, black people, need our own shit. We can’t keep relying on a white company to trickle down one opportunity at a time. What makes Virgil so unique as a black man designer now making the crossover to classic luxury is his background working his way up in the industry as a designer for Kanye West’s Yeezy and his own uber-popular brand, Off White. I guess my question is, what could black luxury fashion look like in its own ecosystem where our talented black designers don’t have to rely on historic recognition to have our work valued and see our careers flourish?
