Protests erupted in Madrid after the death of a Senegalese man who, witnesses say, was chased through the streets by police. Mmame Mbage was a vendor believed to be in his mid-thirties who arrived in Spain 12-years-ago by boat. He was found unconscious in the streets of Lavapiés by police on patrol who tried to revive him but were unsuccessful. According to emergency services, Mbage died of cardiac arrest. The spokeswoman had no further details as to what happened prior to Mbage’s death, but other street vendors who were with him at the time confirmed that he was chased by police from Puerta del Sol.

“Municipal police arrived and chased him from Sol to Lavapiés with a motorbike,” said Modou, a 25-year-old vendor from Senegal who refused to give his surname. The Guardian also reports that Mbage was one of the thousands of migrants who come to Spain in search of opportunities and that he worked illegally as a vendor to send money back home to his family.
