The creative brainchild of black students at the University of Southern California, #IAMPERIOD is a portrait series aimed at demystifying black stereotypes by challenging the pre-convinced notions of what blackness, black people, and the black experience signify or is supposed to be. Shot by photographer Joy Ofodu under the direction of Quincy Nkwonta and their assistant Saphia Jackson, the project uses personal testimony from each subject to “highlight intersecting identities of Black people as a means of transcending the monolithic perception of blacknessā€.
