lena waithe: “queer black characters have been the sidekick for long enough”
Centered around a trio of female friends, Lena Waithe’s comedy series “Twenties” follows the story of Hattie, a queer black girl, and her two straight friends, Maria and Nia. First written back in 2009, misadventures ensue as the trio navigate friendship and finding love, fucking it up along the way and it’s finally making its debut on TBS.
“I always wanted to tell a story where a queer black woman was the protagonist and I’m so grateful to TBS for giving me a platform to tell this story,” says Waithe. “Queer black characters have been the sidekick for long enough, it’s time for us to finally take the lead.”
Waithe executive produces the project through her company Hillman Grad Productions.
